After the 745th viewing of the animated movie on the life of Krishna, my youngest daughter Meher once again asked me the most obvious question, related to the birth of the Lord. Why did the Gods announce to Lord Krishna’s uncle, that the eighth child, meaning Lord Krishna, would kill the blasted man? Why not go about the job silently?
Now this is what I told her. See if my rambling makes any sense.
So there was this chap called Kamsa or Kans, but for this story we will name the chap, Kamsa, and he through a heavy carbo-protein diet and various fitness training programmes and also because he was the ruler of Mathura, was much dreaded and not know for any kind of political or rational tolerance. He certainly wasn’t standing in line when compassion was being dished out by our Lord and Master.
Ok, so Kamsa had a very good friend called Vasudeva, called by close friends as Vasu. And Monsieur Kamsa had a sister called Devaki, called by close friends as Devaki. So Vasu and Devaki got married and Kamsa was as kicked as a sailor on shore. He decided to personally take both sister and his best pal to their new home. When they were galloping away at a few knots an hour, the sky opened and a voice came through and said ‘ Yo Kamsa….up, up, look up for God’s sake, good, now listen, for all the evil acts you seem to be perpetuating on one and all, I proclaim, that the eight child of your sister and that friend of yours who is smiling from ear to ear, will be the death of you.’ (In certain studies, it has been mentioned that it was holy one Narada to told Kamsa that the eight child of Devaki and Vasudeya would kill him. Ref: Hari-vamsa, Visnu-parva 1.2-16) )
So now Kamsa halted the chariot, scratched a particular part of his anatomy, where there was a suspicious looking growth, straightened his twisted neck, and glared at his sister and his best pal, and decided why wait for the eight child, why not kill his sister and just to speed up digestion, even his best friend.
But Vasu and Devaki pleaded and eventually Kamsa imprisoned them both. Every time Devaki delivered a child, Kamsa would come and kill the child by flinging the child on the prison cell wall. The seventh child was spiritually transferred to Vasu’s first wife’s womb and was declared to Kamsa as still born. That child was Lord Balram and the eight child, our Lord Krishna, was the one who killed Kamsa later on.
Now there are two questions that puzzle me. Why keep Devaki and Vasu together in a cell? Why not keep Devaki alone? If alone there is no chance of her becoming a mother. Or why not have them both just killed, so if dead, there is no way Devaki and Vasu’s eight child could kill Kamsa? Remember Kamsa was a ruthless chap. He had killed innumerable people. He loved his life.
And of course, why did the voice from the sky warn Kamsa? He was a ruthless man. The Heaven above should have known he would have resorted to either killing his sister or killing the babies born to her. Why did the Gods above not quietly let the eight baby be born and then let Lord Krishna kill His cruel uncle? Why would God or some loud mouthed spirit announce the plans of the Cosmos of the eight kid creating another hole in Kamsa’s anatomy to the very man? If the man hadn’t been warned the other babies wouldn’t have been killed so mercilessly and yes, why wait for the eight child, why not let the first child kill Kamsa?
Or for that matter if Devaki and Vasu had decided on being celibate, their children would not have been ruthlessly killed.
It is true, God and His band of workers work in mysterious ways or as one sage told me, that one shouldn’t expect rationality from the Heavens, as that ship has sailed long ago for God and His merry band.
My perception, deduction and chronic indigestion, lead me to comprehend that it is because I don’t believe any of this happened the way it has been written and believed to have taken place. Doesn’t make sense right?
I believe that Kamsa represents each individual. Devaki and Vasu represent the woman-man energy in each individual. You have seven kids who were killed, when in reality the seventh child wasn’t killed but the child was astrally transferred to the womb of another woman.
For me, each child represents a chakra. Six children were killed. To die also means to be born again or to be transformed into another form or become nothingness. So the first six children killed could also mean that all past life experiences, collected over lifetimes, associated with each of the six chakras were nullified, were cleared off, or burnt away or transformed into nothingness; the first six chakras starting from the root to the third eye chakra, were made empty. All the karmas connected to those chakras were vanquished and overcome or transformed or to be put crudely, killed. It is told, that one must kill one’s desires, and become void of all desires to really progress spiritually.
The seventh child wasn’t killed but miraculously transferred into another womb. The seventh chakra is the crown chakra. The six chakras are related with the individual consciousness. The seventh stands for Universal Consciousness. One needs to transform or channel the individual consciousness to Universal Consciousness. This chakra stands for detachment and enlightenment. That chakra is beyond death. The seventh child of Devaki was miraculously transferred to another womb. Which means the individual consciousness was transferred to Universal Consciousness. The crown chakra was opened, the small individual I was transformed into the big I of universal Oneness. So Lord Balram was transferred to another womb.
Chakras signify energy centers. Each chakra is also the deposit of life times of experience connected to the particular chakra and also connected with parts of the body. So the heart chakra, would be the vault bank of all emotions and emotional ties experienced, good or harsh, through the individual soul’s countless lifetimes and all karmic bonds with each individual connected with emotions. The heart chakra is the deposit of all emotions ever accumulated in the chakra, located in the heart region. Thus, hate, anger, love, jealousy etc etc are all contained in the heart chakra. Every emotion, good or bad, is deposited in the heart chakra and till that chakra isn’t restored to its original state of nothingness and Oneness, one can never really progress. Same goes for other chakras. The throat chakra would contain all communication said and unsaid and results and ramifications created due to communication or non communication. Thus, till all deposits in the throat chakra are not cleaned away and a calm state of nothingness isn’t restored, one keeps grappling with communication or non verbalization. Chakra cleansing slowly erases all karma associated with that particular chakra. Thus, goes for all the chakras and their corresponding karmic dumping.
Prayers, chanting, yogic breathing, meditation and positive surrender to one’s Master, brings a state of cleansing in all the chakras and leads to a state of nothingness. One needs to clear all backlog of karmic deposits connected with each chakra, to be in the state of Oneness; in the blissful state of Universal Nothingness.
Thus Kamsa, representing each an every human being, killed six babies; death means a new beginning; remember the Gita says, one can die only once, never to be reborn. True Death means the end of one’s karmic journey, where one’s karmic baggage is done away with and merging with The Source takes place. To be in the state of nothingness is to have reached the state of Oneness as one needs to go back to The Source, as one came from the source; no karma; no baggage; nothing.
‘To die’ means not to have any more karmic baggage; no more give or take in the karmic balance sheet. One needs to kill the lower self to emerge to the state of Universal Oneness. ‘Thus six babies were died. Karmic baggage connected with six chakras were done with’.
The seventh baby didn’t die for the simple reason, the crown chakra is self realization, and you can’t kill self realization; you can only awaken it, so the seventh child was astrally transferred to another womb. To transfer life from one womb to another, means transformation of the small individual I to the Oneness I.
The eighth child was Krishna, who when born, had to be removed from the prison cell. The child doesn’t cry. It laughs. The cell automatically opens; the guards are all sleeping; Vasudev carries the child in a basket; walks through the waters, with a Serpent covering the child from the rain and thunder and lightning, and gives the child to his friend, and begins to retrace his step back to the prison cell, but this time not with his child but the child of his friend; and he returns to his prison cell and then the guards wake up. What does this mean?
The eighth chakra can’t be imprisoned by an individual, it belongs to the cosmos. Nothing can contain it. The prison cell opens automatically and guards are sleeping, means the eight chakra is Oneness and it can’t be experienced by one and all and can be experienced by only those with the right vision while those in slumber can never experience or see it.
Vasudeva carries the child over the turbulent Sea. Means the eight chakra is beyond the sea of karma. A five headed Serpent protects the eight child from rain, lightning and thunder. The Universal Kundalini which is shaped like a Serpent, is the protector of the eight chakra and no karmic maya can touch it.
And the eighth child kills Kamsa. The eighth chakra removes one’s obsession with the individual self. A man can be enlightened but still has individuality and still may not be self realized. So there is still the ego. The opening of the seventh chakra doesn’t do away with individuality. But the eighth chakra kills that remaining ego too and you become one with the Universal Life Force or Oneness. But only when the time is right can this take place and that is why the world had to wait for such a long time for Kamsa to go about life without a head; meaning no ego, no self, no karmic baggage; but it takes time, and this is how Krishna kills Kamsa.
The child that has been brought in, in place of Krishna, doesn’t die too. The child belongs to Vasudeva’s friend, a cowherd chief named, Nanda who lived in Gokula whose wife Yashoda Ma, had given birth to a daughter. When Kamsa flings the child, thinking this is the eight child, the child transforms into The Goddess Yogamaya,; which is Shakti, which is Universal Energy. One can’t see it, one can only experience it.
I may be wrong. This is my perception. I am no scholar of the Ancient Scriptures. But I do believe all ancient truths have been clothed in the form of parables. I honestly feel there is more to every scripture than the obvious. But this I do know. Krishna is God Consciousness just as Sai Baba of Shirdi or Nanak or Meher Baba or Baba Nityanand. You can not contain God Consciousness.
Be Blessed.
